On Syntactic Integration and Semantico-Pragmatic Distribution of Mbya Guarani Purpose Coding Strategies

The aim of this paper is to describe the available strategies for coding purpose relations in Mbya, focusing on their semantico-pragmatic distribution. According Dooley, Mbya Guarani presents two main different involved relations: aguã nominalizations and vy-dependent clauses, among latter a motion-cum-purpose (MCP) construction subtype included. These differ regard semantic class verb, referential continuity between dependent unit, fact that form can be negated independently from clause—thus, establishing degrees integration within unit each case—, but overlap same-subject contexts involve directed motion verb. However, according our data, speakers do not use these constructions interchangeably, whereas portray an intended hypothetical outcome event or state-of-affair (hereafter SoA) expressed matrix clause; clauses consistently trigger result interpretation, entailing SoA was successfully accomplished.
